Apr.5 Hand quilt along….

Just a quick peek into my quilt project,I won’t keep you long.. well, to be honest… I’m camping and short on time. There’s so much more exciting things then social media to do today. I’ll catch up tomorrow with you quilting folks .

My new project…..

This top has some issues as you can see. A lot of the white blocks are rather gathered. I could have taken them out ,cut them down to right size, somehow I felt like this was someone hard work sewn into this top. I think with a heavier quilting pattern some of the gathers with be taken up. I love it the way it is , so if it is still very imperfect that is fine by me.
Some more photos of the makings and I did start at the corner.
Once again there will be no time frame as to when it will be finished.

And the border
The old girl is ready to be worked on.
Her age… a good 120 years. She is definitely titled to a few wrinkled!😃

March 15…Hand quilt along update…

Womenfolk.com has some very interesting articles of quilting history. I was browsing through some of the myths that they had written about ,with one being that while it’s a lovely picture of a lady piecing a quilt by the fireplace,it is rather unlikely that was the way it was because of the poor lighting. The quilting was more likely to be done May through Nov. when the days were longer. Makes sense as I use a bright light to shine on my quilt when I quilt in the evenings,so I can see the small quilting stitches.

Now it is time for the postponed happy dance! A finished quilted.💃💃

The back
I use a piece from moda collection ,this pieced is called heritage.
This photo shows the quilting a little.
Also put together a few charity quilts.

I haven’t decided on next project yet….

Feb.23… Hand quilt along update

There is not much to report this round. I was hoping to be doing a happy dance, but life got in the way . That’s okay for the work that needed to be done was enjoyable. Hubby and I were doing clean up as the stormy weather brought down a large tree, and we then decided to bring down a few more trees that were dead and needed to come down before they fell on something other than the ground! We were able to work up the already fallen tree, and with six other pines that the pine beetle had gotten into.
So here’s what I did get done …
I finished all the blocks, just need to finished the border.
Stitch in the ditch between the blocks, and brown then stitch in the ditch between the brown and blue fabric .

Feb.2…..Hand quilt along update….

It’s time again to see how far I’ve come on my quilting projects.
Here’s where I was three weeks ago on the log cabin….
I was on the second to last row working on the bottom half of blocks with three of those blocks half finished.
Today I’m on the last row with three of the blocks half done out of the six left, …..a finish maybe next time around?!
A close up of work…
I didn’t get much done on this oldie just one row of fans.
Here’s the back
I did more crocheting in my spare time as warm,(hot) weather isn’t a good time for crocheting ,the yarn doesn’t slip through the fingers very well. I really want this one done before that happens.
This it’s for me😊

Jan.12….Hand quilt along update….

Harriet Powers was born under slavery in Athens ,Ga ,she learned to sew by others around her and that it may have also included her mistress. This quilt she made is call the Bible quilt.

For today’s update…. here’s where I was…

In the last block of the row with 12 more blocks to go.

Today I finished that row ,rolled the top ,working for right to left in the third block down leaving me 9 and a half blocks to finish.

Leona had a bad cold that had me close by her side again ,so I pulled out this quilt top to work on in the lap hoop.

Quilting baptist fans on it ..about 1/3 of the way done. It’s a throw
size quilt.
These are all old vintage scrap pieces that I used.
That’s it for me.
Check out the others! the purpose of this group is to share our hand quilting adventures and to encourage each other. New members are always welcome, any type of hand quilting is acceptable. That could be piecing, quilting, embellishing, applique and finishing.

Dec.22…Hand quilt along update

A little history..

Gambeson… a quilted protective jacket that was worn under a metal armor ,or just as it was if one could not afford the metal armor.

Look at all quilting on done on this one.

Now for my update… here’s where I was three weeks ago working on the last bottom block ,now I’m working in the last block on the top , almost ready to turn. Then I will only have 8 blocks left!
Last block on the left bottom
Last top right block.
I did finish two quilt tops for CAM, nothing fancy ..just will be warm when finished.

Dec 1 …..Hand quilt along update….

The quilt covers 11,390 square feet, a faithful reproduction of the state of North Dakota with every county a different color. Volunteers from 53 North Dakota counties helped stitch the quilt. It was the largest in the world until the AIDS quilt came along; now it’s known as the world’s largest historical quilt.

Leona Tennyson was responsible for putting it together with a measurement 85 ft. by 134 ft.

Now for the update on the lovely old log cabin…

Here is where I was last time ….

I had just rolled working on the first block to your right. I am a very short armed person so with the roll getting larger that I have to put my arm under while working with the other arm on top , I can no longer work a whole block. I just did the lower half all the way across , reaching the last block on this set of blocks.

last block that I’m working on

I did get a quilt that I had finished quilting in 2015 bond!😱

looks nice on my bed.

That’s it for me this round! Hope all enjoyed their Thanksgiving day.

Nov. 10…. Hand quilt along update……

A warm welcome to Bella, and Daisy ,so glad you joined us and looking forward to seeing your projects. Connie ,delighted to have you on the list again.😊

I had these old blocks setting in the sewing closet for awhile just waiting for me to do something with them. Let’s take a look at these little blocks..

As you can see the blocks were not all the same size,so I first trimmed them to 4”

Some of the seams were off very much so, so I redid those. I am beginning to think that some were beginners block…. so was it a young one or an adult??

The stitching on some of the blocks definitely showed signs of someone learning….

Some were done by machine… wonder if it was a treadle like my great Grammy had ,or an older hand crank machine?
Then some were done by a more experienced hand, these blocks will not tear at the seams any to soon! They were first sewn to together then press open with a whipped stitch on top . Very neatly done.
Then there were blocks that were marked with a stitched H…did it mean block placement or for a certain pattern that were left overs?
There are still many questions one can ask but this I know that these lovely old “antique” blocks are at least 110 years old, and they needed to be put into a quilt with no added new fabric, and it will make a wonderful piece of history in my house whether hanging on a wall, or draped in an old doll cradle…. which by the way ,I tell my family I’m in need of but haven’t got on yet!😁
I think I will quilt this in a Baptist style pattern, for I will use a pen that the markings disappear rather quickly ,and mark as I go. Like the old log cabin that I’m working on now,so the light hand washing they get will be easy to do .
Now time for update on the old log cabin…
I had three of the blocks to one row done, I was able to finish the other three and roll ,working on the first block in that row.
I’m now half way finished!💃
Rolled row
The block that I’m working on .
Please check out the others in the handquilt along…..

Oct.20…Hand quilt along update

The Tristan Quilt, sometimes called the Tristan and Isolde Quilt or the Guicciardini Quilt, is one of the earliest surviving quilts in the world.Depicting scenes from the story of Tristan and Isolde, an influential romance and tragedy, it was made in Sicily during the second half of the 14th century.

Sept. 29… Hand quilt along update….

Quilt” is derived from the Latin word culcita, which means “stuffed sack.”

And…

The earliest depiction of quilting was discovered in Egypt; it was an ivory figurine of a pharaoh wearing quilted clothing, ca. 3400 BC

Well they say it’s fall time but I’m not really ready to believe that yet as it is still very much like summer here! And dry, we are in what I’ve just learned a flash drought.

So with this flash drought ,I have no grass to cut,or weed whacking to do, it’s been in the upper 90’s to 100’s so I decided to keep my nose inside as much as possible.

Welcome back quilting!👏👏

Here’s where I was …. working in the two center blocks

Finished those two blocks, and quilted the last two ,along with the border.

Closer look at the quilting

Ready for another row of blocks. There’s a little bit of looseness in the blocks but the quilting seems to handle it okay.

That’s it for me this around.😊
