Harriet Powers was born under slavery in Athens ,Ga ,she learned to sew by others around her and that it may have also included her mistress. This quilt she made is call the Bible quilt.
For today’s update…. here’s where I was…
Leona had a bad cold that had me close by her side again ,so I pulled out this quilt top to work on in the lap hoop.
Nothing worse than a bad cold…hope Leona is feeling better and you don’t come down with it. Oh I just I love that brown quilt your working on. Those vintage fabrics are wonderful…love the whole look of this. The log cabin is coming along great too. I also caught the program on Quilts on PBS!
I hope to I don’t! Leona is feeling better still coughs a lot but no fever. Good to hear you like those old fabrics. ❤️ I didn’t see the program was it good?
If its a sickness, we’ve both got it. Although I don’t quilt you don’t know how many quilt squares, scraps, and other vintage fiber crafted pieces I come home with whenever I’m in an antique store. It’s either textiles or paper – books, photographs, postcards.
It is a plus with hand quilting that you can take it anywhere. I just watched a PBS show on historic quilts that told stories.

You are a two fisted quilter! They are both lovely, the Baptist fan looks great on the brown. How satisfying to turn the log cabin!

Thank you! It is fun to roll the quilt, and see the other end getting closer. Wanted to stay very traditional with the old fabric.

Oh, I love that Harriet Powers quilt! Makes me think of self-taught artist Horace Pippin (https://suzannesmomsblog.com/2017/06/10/african-american-artist-horace-pippin/), who like her, was often inspired by Bible stories.
